Moore St.: Growing Up in the Era of Jim Crow

TASK

The primary challenge was balancing historical weight with emotional intimacy. The design needed to:

  • Reflect the realities of the Jim Crow South without relying on overly literal or traumatic imagery

  • Convey themes of perseverance, dignity, and community

  • Appeal to both contemporary readers and audiences interested in African American history and memoirs

  • Create a timeless visual system suitable for print, digital promotion, and speaking engagements

The narrative is rooted in a specific neighborhood in Fayetteville, NC, but the underlying message speaks to universal themes of survival, transformation, and hope.

RESULTS

The final book design successfully translated the memoir’s emotional depth that feels authentic, dignified, and timeless.

The project demonstrates how thoughtful editorial design can elevate personal history into a broader cultural narrative that resonates across generations and experiences.

The book is sold on Amazon and has been rated 5 stars.
